Dartmoor is a stunning place to visit at any time of the year, but in Autumn when the trees turn to a golden shade and a glistening frost decorates the rolling fields each morning, it’s truly special.
From castle ruins and local legends, museums, historic railways, hill walks and ragged tors, there’s so much to explore in Dartmoor on a luxury staycation.
To help you choose what to visit at the national park, we’ve handpicked our top activities you can safely enjoy together…
What better way to safely explore the beautiful Devon countryside than on a historic steam railway? The multi-award winning South Devon Railway is a much loved attraction in Dartmoor and is the longest established steam railway in the South West - making it a must visit on any luxury staycation this Autumn.
The South Devon Railway’s next event is the Polar Express train ride held during selected dates in November and December and offering a magical experience for the whole family. Why not find out more about this unique experience?
Tucked away high above the ancient woodlands of the Teign Gorge stands the impressive Castle Drogo, inspired by the rugged Dartmoor tors that surround it. Although the castle is currently undergoing a conversation project, the Lutyens designed garden is a sight to behold come Autumn.
There are miles of pathways to explore and little ones can learn all about the mischievous ways of the Dartmoor pixies in the garden trail. Tickets to explore the magnificent gardens will need to be pre-ordered online.
Whether you prefer to explore Dartmoor National Park on foot, by bike or on the back of a horse, there are plenty of trails you can follow that offer breathtaking views.
For a gentle, scenic stroll, we recommend the Trenchford and Tottiford Reservoirs walk - a 3 mile route that takes you around two lovely reservoirs in a figure-of-eight walk with plenty of picnic benches along the route to stop off and soak up the views.
Visit the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary for a fun-filled trip the whole family can safely experience. Say hello to their cheeky resident otters and see them get into mischief in the underwater viewing area. You'll also be able to watch the otters enjoy their feeding time, learning more from their keepers about the different breeds and personalities of each playful otter.
Since reopening, Dartmoor Otter Sanctury has put in place several new safety measures including the need to pre-book your tickets online before arrival.
