NEW ACTIVITY FOR SUMMER 2025!
Often thought of as the last true wilderness of England, Dartmoor has inspired musicians, artists, writers and indeed hikers, throughout its history, and this gentle hike shows off the best of it. You will pass scattered granite outcrops and spot local wildlife (such as trout, salmon, fallow deer and otters, Dartmoor ponies and birds of prey). Stepping straight from the South Terrace of Bovey Castle into the heart of Dartmoor on a captivating walking tour steeped in history, folklore, and natural beauty. This circular walk requires no transport and follows in the footsteps of those who once lived and worked in the nearby village of North Bovey. Wander along the River Bovey, through ancient and modern woodlands, and onto open moorland, where sweeping views reveal the raw and rugged character of the Dartmoor landscape. As you ascend Easdon Common to its namesake tor, you'll encounter “Figgie Daniel,” a curious landmark that weaves together Dartmoor’s geology and myth. From the summit, soak in breathtaking views of North and East Dartmoor, including the iconic twin peaks of Haytor Rocks and the historical ridge of Hameldown. Discover the legend of the Whooping Rock and enjoy tales of witches, healers, and moorland spirits as we journey back via bridleways lined with wildflowers and traditional hedgerows. With wildlife sightings, panoramic vistas, and stories that bring the landscape to life, this walk is a perfect blend of nature, heritage and Dartmoor magic.
