FALCONRY

Experience the true art of falconry with our internationally-renowned falconer Martin Whitley.

Moor Hawk Walk
Go with Martin and fly Harris Hawks on a breathtaking part of Dartmoor. Not only do you have the chance to fly the birds in a natural environment, but also you get a real feel for Dartmoor National Park at its most dramatic (approximately 90 minutes).

Hunting with Hawks and Falcons
For those who wish to take the falconry experience one step further, sample falconry in its true form with either a full or half day hunting rabbits and other quarry. Martin will give you an introduction to the Harris hawks, dogs and ferrets that will be used. You will be given your hawk for the day and will be instructed in the basics of how to carry and recall it. Once this is completed you shall move to the hunting area to see the hawks in action.

Guests can also be taken out (in season) to see the incredible aerial flight of large falcons hunting Carrion crows on the moor. Hunting can be either half or full day sessions between September and March.

Falconry Experience
An afternoon spent with birds of prey is quite unforgettable. You will get to fly a variety of different birds of prey, observe their individual characteristics and see close up the wonderful partnership that exists between falconers and their birds (approximately 90 minutes).

Eagle Experience
Meet the hotel eagle, Artemis, Bovey Castle's most exciting bird of prey. Under the supervision of Martin Whitley, either at his falconry centre or at a secret location on Dartmoor, you will be taught the principles of handling eagles and their unique approach to hunting in the wild. Your Eagle Experience will also include the opportunity to fly Artemis and all the photo opportunities you could wish for (approximately 90 minutes).

For safety reasons, there is an age restriction of 18 years for the Eagle Experience. Basic fitness is also essential as the Eagle Experience may include walking on Dartmoor and the holding of Artemis, who is not featherlight!
