ARTEMIS THE EAGLE
With a wingspan of 7ft 6in and an appetite for rats, mice and quails, Artemis is a cross between a golden and steppes eagle and the only bird of her magnitude in the UK that can be handled and flown by members of the public.
After an initial training period with Martin Whitley, who runs Dartmoor Hawking and gives daily falconry displays at the hotel, Artemis has been introduced to guests for private flying lessons and hunting small prey. Artemis’ first official flight at the hotel took place on a sunny afternoon in February and she quickly attracted a large crowd of onlookers, with a brief flight around the top lawns of the hotel and landing on a perch when called.
Martin Whitley said: “Artemis is an absolutely incredible eagle and very different to the other birds of prey I work with. Now that she is ready to be flown at Bovey Castle, watching Artemis soar above the wilds of Dartmoor and hunt for prey across the hotel grounds, will be an unforgettable experience.”

"Top tip, stay around in the morning for the falconry display, it was raining when we were there but this did not stop the show, we had a 15 week old Owl called Guinevere swooping up and down the hallways, it was straight out of a Harry Potter film!"
